An Interview with Dorte Hjorth Klitgaard, Application Manager at Palsgaard

In today's world sustainability is more than just a trend. Packaging manufacturers are under increasing pressure to find solutions that meet regulatory compliance and contribute to a greener planet. Einar® plant-based anti-fog and anti-static additives, developed by Palsgaard, are at the forefront of this movement. They offer a unique blend of performance and environmental responsibility.

We had the privilege of conversing with Dorte Hjorth Klitgaard, Application Manager at Palsgaard. She explains about Einar® plant-based additives, why they are essential, and how they set Palsgaard apart in a highly competitive industry.

#1 - What are Einar® plant-based anti-fog and anti-static additives, and why are they needed?

Einar® plant-based anti-fog and anti-static additives are specialized solutions designed to enhance the performance and visual appeal of plastic packaging.

Fogging occurs when moisture condenses on the inside of food packaging. It not only detracts from the appearance but can also impact the shelf-life of the product if the condensed water droplets spread to the surface of the food product. Anti-fog additives work by reducing the surface tension of the water droplets, allowing them to spread evenly across the surface instead of forming visible droplets. This ensures that the contents remain fresh and clearly visible, enhancing product presentation and consumer appeal.

'Consumers have become very conscious of product quality, especially in the food sector, and packaging clarity has become a key selling point. Einar® plant-based anti-fog additives help ensure that the product is always presented in its best light,' explains Dorte Hjorth Klitgaard, Application Manager at Palsgaard.

Additionally, anti-static additives are crucial for preventing the buildup of static electricity, which can attract dust and other particles to the packaging surface. This is particularly important in environments where cleanliness is paramount, such as in the packaging of electronics or medical products. By preventing static buildup, these additives help maintain the integrity and cleanliness of the packaging, ensuring that products reach consumers in the best possible condition.

#2 - What are the main uses and compatible polymers for Einar® plant-based anti-static and anti-fog additives?

Einar® plant-based additives are highly versatile and can be used in a variety of polymers, making them suitable for a wide range of packaging applications.

  1. For anti-fog purposes, Einar® additives are commonly used in polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These polymers are widely employed in the production of food packaging, where maintaining clarity and visibility is critical to consumer satisfaction. The anti-fog properties of Einar® plant-based additives are particularly beneficial in applications such as fresh produce, meat, and dairy packaging, where condensation can significantly impact product presentation and freshness.

  2. For anti-static applications, Einar® additives are also compatible with PE, PP, and other commonly used polymers.

'These additives are designed with flexibility in mind. Whether it's food packaging or sensitive electronics, our goal is to provide a solution that not only meets functional requirements but also aligns with sustainability goals,' notes Klitgaard.

#3 - How do Einar® plant-based additives help packaging manufacturers achieve their sustainability goals?

Sustainability is a growing priority for packaging manufacturers, who are seeking ways to reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining high product standards. Einar® additives are derived from plant-based sources, making them a natural and eco-friendly alternative to traditional petrochemical-based additives. This not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also aligns with the global shift towards renewable resources.

'Manufacturers are facing increasing demands to create sustainable packaging solutions without compromising on performance. With Einar® additives, they can achieve both. These plant-based solutions are a perfect fit for companies striving to meet eco-friendly goals while maintaining quality and efficiency,' says Klitgaard.
