Unsaturated polyesters are viscous, amber-colored resins that allow high strength, rapid curing, and excellent adhesion. They are ideally used in marine coatings, industrial finishes, and fiberglass-reinforced coatings. These resins provide superior chemical resistance and mechanical durability, ensuring long-lasting performance. 

The industry is evolving towards low-styrene and bio-based unsaturated polyesters for environmental sustainability. They are available in ortho-, iso-, and vinyl ester-modified versions. They comply with VOC and hazardous air pollutant (HAP) regulations in coatings.

Quantum QC® 8800 by LyondellBasell is an unsaturated polyester hybrid composite reinforced with 63% w/w E-glass fiber. It possesses high stiffness, fatigue resistance and high strength. It can be molded at temperatures in the range of 260-310°F, with 280°F suggested as a starting point. Its cure time depends on molding temperature and part thickness. It is processed by sheet molding. Quantum QC® 8800 has a shelf life of 2 months.
