Styrenic Block Copolymer (SBC) appears as translucent to transparent, elastic pellets or granules with excellent clarity potential and a soft, rubber-like feel. Key features include excellent elasticity, high clarity potential, good processing characteristics, colorability, adhesive properties, and good processability. SBCs are primarily used in adhesives and sealants, footwear components, medical devices, elastic films, grips and handles, and soft-touch overmolding.
Alternatives include thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs), and thermoset rubbers. The industry trend shows increasing development of specialty grades for medical applications and growing focus on recycled and bio-based formulations. Sub-types include styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS), styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS), hydrogenated versions, and numerous specialty formulations incorporating oils, resins, and other modifiers.
