Polysulfone (PSU) appears as an amber to light brown, transparent thermoplastic with exceptional rigidity and dimensional stability. Key features include exceptional heat resistance, excellent hydrolytic stability, good resistance to acids and bases, inherent flame retardancy without additives, and superior resistance to radiation and steam sterilization. Polysulfone is used in medical devices, membrane filtration systems, food processing equipment, aerospace components, and electrical/electronic parts.
The material serves as an alternative to polycarbonate and other high-performance thermoplastics like polyetherimide (PEI) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Recent innovations include composite grades, conductive formulations, and specialized medical grades with controlled biocompatibility for long-term implantable devices. Sub-types include standard PSU, polyethersulfone (PES), and polyphenylsulfone (PPSU).
