Polyisobutylene Rubber (PIB) is known for outstanding gas and moisture impermeability, excellent vibration damping, superior chemical resistance to acids and bases, exceptional electrical insulation properties, remarkable aging resistance, and unique self-healing properties in low molecular weight grades. PIB finds applications in tire inner liners, pharmaceutical stoppers, chewing gum base, lubricant additives, and cable insulation.
The material competes with butyl rubber. Sub-types are primarily differentiated by molecular weight, halogenated PIB, succinic anhydride-modified PIB, and hydroxyl-terminated PIB. Recent innovations focus on controlled-release systems using PIB for pharmaceutical applications and ultra-high molecular weight grades for enhanced performance in demanding sealing applications.
