POM fine powder from Daicel adopted for stick-form solid lubricant
Last update on Jun 25, 2026
Formulators and engineers working on solid lubricant development can now evaluate DURAST® POM fine powder from Daicel Corporation (formerly Polyplastics) as an enabling material in stick-form lubricant applications. According to the company, the powder has been adopted by Japan-based Maia Co. Ltd. for a stick-form solid lubricant product produced under Maia's Sol・Mid™ manufacturing technology.
Maintains compatibility between UHMW-PE and grease layer
The Sol・Mid™ product is formed by combining ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) with grease. According to Daicel, DURAST® POM fine powder functions as an interlayer between the UHMW-PE and the grease, playing a role in maintaining compatibility between the two components. The company states that the chemical properties of DURAST® POM underpin the performance of the Sol・Mid™ product.
Daicel reports that processing general-purpose resins into uniform powder using conventional grinding methods has historically presented significant manufacturing challenges. The company states it addressed this through the development of a proprietary manufacturing process for DURAST® POM, which it describes as yielding a distinctive particle shape with a controlled, fine, and sharp particle size distribution.
Eliminates leakage and dripping issues
The stick format of the Sol・Mid™ product eliminates leakage risks associated with liquid lubricants and offers handling convenience at maintenance sites for office equipment and industrial machinery. According to the company, the format also addresses issues of dripping, splattering, and waste caused by over-application that are common with conventional liquid lubricant formats.
For office equipment maintenance specifically, Daicel states the Sol・Mid™ stick lubricant may reduce use of conventional maintenance oil by approximately 80 percent compared to standard application methods. Maia's Sol・Mid™ technology also supports production of custom-molded shapes beyond the standard stick-shaped container format,
According to Daicel, the stick-format solution utilizing DURAST® POM is scheduled for full-scale commercialization targeting maintenance applications across several industrial segments. These include major office equipment manufacturers, industrial machinery repair, bicycle maintenance, and conveyor systems.
