Novamont's Bioplastic Twines and Clips Help Manage Agricultural Crop Waste ProductsA one-year experimental study carried out in Bayer CropScience's Spanish greenhouses has confirmed that it is possible to help solve the problem of the end of life of agricultural crop waste products, using twine and clips made of Novamont's Mater-Bi compostable bioplastic.

Generates a Final Compost of High Quality

The Mater-Bi devices met all the requirements for toughness, strength and flexibility required throughout the entire cycle and in the most extreme weather conditions. At the end of the crop, the devices were collected with vegetable waste and treated in an industrial composting plant SACh generating a final compost of high quality. Servicios Ambientales Las Chozas (SACh) is a company with experience in the management and treatment of agricultural waste with composting facilities.

The new compostable devices, which have an ISO 14067:2018 certified carbon footprint, have thus contributed to simplifying and making more efficient the management of vegetable waste. This allows it to be composted without the need for separation of plastic materials and avoiding the consequent accidental accumulation of non-perishable plastic substances in the soil.

Constantly Evolving Towards Greater Sustainability and Circularity

"At Bayer CropScience, a company committed to innovation in agriculture, we have been looking for alternatives to the conventional plastics used in our experimental fields. The aim was to identify innovative solutions that would support more sustainable end-of-life management of agricultural crop waste products. We found the answer in Novamont's biodegradable and compostable Mater-Bi devices, which were tested on different crops over the course of a year in over 80 hectares with optimal results," said Alejandro Caravaca, head EMEA Veg R&D Sustainability and Outreach at Bayer CropScience.

"Mater-Bi, the result of more than 30 years of research and innovation at Novamont, is a product that is constantly evolving towards greater sustainability and circularity, for an increasingly efficient use of renewable resources thanks to an all-European and increasingly integrated supply chain. We are very proud that our solutions for agriculture are considered applicable by a leading company like Bayer CropScience. And that they can help farmers improve the sustainability of production cycles and help ensure soil quality," said Marco Pecchiari, Novamont head of Ecology of Product and Environmental Communication.
