Dow and RDM Group introduce recycled PE-based solution for food barrier packaging

Last update on Apr 29, 2026

Formulators and product developers in the food sector can now evaluate a new circular barrier solution designed for demanding applications such as frozen fish, fruit trays, and dry pet food.

Developed through a collaboration between Dow and RDM Group, Multiboard CirculaRR combines recycled cartonboard with advanced recycled polyethylene (PE). This allows packaging specifiers to integrate a food-contact-compliant material made entirely from recycled content into their production lines.

ISCC PLUS certified

To ensure safety in sensitive applications, the plastic component of the solution is certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) system. According to the suppliers, this confirms the use of recycled plastic from advanced recycling through a mass-balance chain of custody. The packaging solution has also achieved certification from ISEGA, an independent testing institute specializing in materials intended for food contact, confirming its suitability for food packaging applications.

Marian Gmenta, senior marketing manager for circular and renewable solutions at Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics EMEA, states, “By combining RDM Group’s fiber‑based packaging expertise with Dow’s circular polymer know‑how, we have developed a food‑contact‑compliant packaging solution, exclusively from recycled materials, with broad application potential that supports brands and converters as they prepare for upcoming EU packaging requirements such as PPWR.”

The material allows engineers to utilize existing mixed paper recycling streams for end-of-life management, as the solution contains approximately 5% PE by weight.

Krzysztof Krajewski, chief sustainability and innovation officer at RDM Group, commented, “Multiboard CirculaRR is a packaging innovation that advances circularity in food packaging. Now its plastic part is certified as being made from recycled materials and is designed for recyclability. Through our collaboration with Dow, we want to help the recycling industry move beyond the siloes of fibre and plastic and focus on accelerating our common goal of advancing circularity and preventing packaging waste.”

Designed for recyclability

Product developers can use this material to prepare for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030. The solution has been independently assessed using the 4evergreen testing protocol, confirming its compatibility with established paper recycling systems. This provides specifiers with a technical pathway to meet mandatory recycled plastic content targets without compromising food safety.

The solution will be presented at interpack 2026 at Dow’s booth (Hall 9, C24), where manufacturers can examine prototypes and evaluate how fiber-based and plastic materials can be combined for high-performance outcomes.
