Comotomo uses BASF's PPSU as the base polymer in baby bottle ring component
Last update on Jun 22, 2026
Meeting the food-contact safety requirements that govern infant products – FDA, Food Containers (FC), and Guobiao (GB) – is a non-negotiable threshold for any material used in baby bottle components.
The ring component of Comotomo's next-generation silicone baby bottle addresses this requirement through a combination of two qualified materials: BASF's Ultrason® P 2010 polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) as the base polymer, and Avient's Colorant Chromatics™ high-temperature color formulation for the customized blue finish. Comotomo, a Korean manufacturer of infant care products, selected this material combination for the overmolded ring that provides structural support for the silicone bottle body.

Resistance to superheated steam sterilization
The Ultrason® P 2010 grade used for the ring component offers a set of functional properties relevant to the sterilization and cleaning cycles required in infant care. According to BASF, the material provides exceptional chemical resistance, excellent dimensional stability, and resistance to superheated steam sterilization. It is rated for use in dishwashers, boiling water, microwave ovens, and bottle sterilizers. Its high heat resistance and impact strength also allow it to withstand the temperatures and pressures involved in the silicone overmolding process used during manufacturing.
Avient's Colorant Chromatics high-temperature color technology enables the colored PPSU to meet the applicable food-contact regulatory standards while delivering the specific blue shade required for Comotomo's brand identification and consumer appeal.
"By leveraging our collective expertise on product, material, and colors, we have created a product that meets the critical quality requirements applicable to baby bottles," said Hank Choi, head of the R&D Center at Comotomo. "It was Avient's and BASF's strong track record that drove our decision to approach them, and they impressively demonstrated their commitment to the highest standards for food safety and product quality, making them the ideal collaborators for Comotomo."
The baby bottle with the Avient-colored ring component is manufactured at the Comotomo facility in South Korea and is currently available in China.
