Avient launches PFAS-free material technology for lubricious catheters
Last update on Jan 7, 2026
Avient Corporation, an innovator of materials solutions, announced its latest addition to its engineered materials portfolio for healthcare: GlideTech™ Formulations. This new material technology was developed to impart lubricity to catheters without the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) or the need for secondary coating processes.
Excellent coefficient of friction without PTFE use
GlideTech materials come in a variety of standard base resins and can also be customized to meet specific needs. These single-pellet polymer compounds streamline manufacturing while delivering excellent coefficient of friction (CoF) performance without the use of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Additional features of GlideTech formulations include compliance with ISO 10993-5 and USP <87>, compatibility with standard sterilization methods, and enhanced processability compared to traditional catheter materials on conventional extrusion equipment.

"As regulations evolve, it's exciting to use our formulation expertise to help customers achieve their desired CoF performance when replacing their current materials, such as those containing PFAS," said Brad Davison, Technology director for Specialty Engineered Materials at Avient. "The excellent lubricity and processability of GlideTech materials provide a straightforward way for catheter manufacturers to reduce processing complexity and lower manufacturing costs without compromising performance."
Avient will be showcasing GlideTech formulations next month at MD&M West, February 3–5, in Anaheim, Calif., in Hall D, Booth 2358.
