ASTM introduces new standards for testing certified compostable products

Last update on Aug 29, 2025

ASTM International has released two new standards that set clearer methods for testing the disintegration of certified compostable products in industrial composting facilities.

This achievement comes from a collaborative effort led by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), with input from stakeholders across the value chain—including Becky Brooks, NatureWorks’ Global Product Regulatory Affairs manager and active ASTM member.

Provides consistency for field testing

According to Rhodes Yepsen, executive director at BPI, these new standards are a critical step toward aligning systems change for widespread composting. They will also provide much-needed consistency for field testing and help guide the creation of Responsible End Markets in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks.

For NatureWorks, these standards are more than technical updates, they’re tools that will help scale composting infrastructure, build confidence in compostable solutions, and move the company closer to a circular economy.
