Solar Materials Developments to Watch Going ForwardOver the past fifteen years, solar or PhotoVoltaic (PV) technology has progressed from a small, splintered market to developing into a major source of electricity. After hydroelectric and wind power, solar is currently, in terms of in place capacity, the third most significant source of renewable energy.

Cumulative photovoltaic capacity now supplies 2 percent of global electricity demand. Installed capacity is forecasted to more than double to nearly 525 GW (Giga Watts) by 2020 with demand expected to reach 90 GW, which will represent a 50% increase over year end 2015.

Asia is the fastest growing region, with more than 50% of global capacity installations. China and Japan alone accounted for half of worldwide PV capacity increases. Europe has 20% of the global PV market, and North and South America combined have accounted for another 20%, with the rest of the world at 10%.
