How to get rid of unpleasant hair odor?
Last update on Jun 9, 2025
A smelly scalp means the skin on top of your head has an unpleasant scent. If the scalp is smelly, your hair can smell too! A combination of several factors, such as hair hygiene, dietary changes, and hormonal changes, could be the culprit behind it.
However, what exactly goes on when your hair smells, and how do you prevent it? Let’s find out.
Causes of hair malodor
Sweat & excessive sebum are major causes for sure. However, it is not the only reason creating the malodor:
Bacteria: When sweat mixes with bacteria naturally present on the scalp, it can break down and produce a slightly sour or ammonia-like smell.
Fungal infection: A fungal infection, like dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, can cause an itchy, flaky scalp and contribute to scalp odor.
Skin conditions: Conditions like psoriasis or eczema on the scalp can cause inflammation and increase the risk of scalp odor.
Poor hygiene: Not washing your hair regularly causes sweat, sebum, and dead skin cells to build up on the scalp, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.
Medical conditions: Certain hormonal changes or medical conditions can sometimes affect scalp health and lead to odor.
