How to formulate cosmetics for mattifying effect and sebum control?

Oily skin is a constant battle for many. Sebum production is a natural process, but excessive production leads to acne and blackheads. However, it can be controlled for a more balanced complexion.
What is sebum?
Sebum is a type of oil that your skin produces. It is made up of lipids, which are fats, and is released by your sebaceous glands. Sebum helps keep your skin soft and prevents it from drying out. It also helps protect your skin from bacteria and other invaders1.
When can sebum production be a problem?
Sebum production becomes a problem when it goes into overdrive. While sebum production is an indication of healthy skin, an excess can lead to:
Oily skin and shine: Excessive sebum leaves the skin feeling greasy and looking shiny, particularly in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).
Enlarged pores: Sebum can clog pores, causing them to stretch and appear larger.
Acne breakouts: When sebum mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria, it can block pores further. This can lead to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.
