SUCROSE PALMITATE

Last update on Jul 23, 2025

Sucrose Palmitate is a sugar-based ingredient that acts as a mild emulsifier, surfactant, and conditioner in cosmetics and personal care products. Often combined with other stabilizing esters, it helps blend oil and water-based ingredients in creams and lotions. As a gentle and non-stripping surfactant, it is used in cleansers and baby products to lift oil and dust from the surface of skin and scalp. This ingredient has a very low irritation potential and is safe for use even on sensitive skin and delicate areas. Additionally, Sucrose Palmitate acts as a humectant - attracting moisture to the skin and leaving a soft and non-greasy finish.

What is SUCROSE PALMITATE used for?

Sucrose Palmitate is a potent emulsifier and emollient used in cosmetics for its gentle, skin-friendly properties. It offers both functional and sensory benefits, making it ideal for clean beauty and sensitive formulations.

For skin: Sucrose Palmitate helps blend water and oil phases in creams, lotions, and serums. Its sugar-based structure allows it to retain moisture, giving the skin a soft, smooth feel without heaviness or irritation. Suitable for sensitive or allergy-prone skin, it enhances product spreadability while supporting the skin barrier and preventing trans epidermal water loss. It is frequently used in moisturizers, sunscreens, and baby care products due to its mildness.

For hair: Sucrose Palmitate provides light conditioning benefits in hair care products while improving the distribution of oils and active ingredients across the hair shaft. It can help reduce static and frizz in conditioners and leave-in treatments, leaving hair softer and more manageable. Its non-greasy texture makes it ideal for fine or oily hair types.

Origin

Sucrose Palmitate is made by esterifying sucrose (table sugar) with palmitic acid (a saturated fatty acid). The final ingredient is washed, filtered, and purified. In its raw form, Sucrose Palmitate appears as a white to off-white powder that is soluble in oil. Its chemical formula is C28H52O12.
