Last update on Jul 3, 2025

Silk Powder is a natural and versatile ingredient well-known in the world of cosmetics for its skin and hair benefiting properties. It conditions the skin and forms a protective layer on the surface to prevent moisture loss. Silk Powder lubricates the skin and makes it appear smooth, soft, and hydrated. As a hair conditioning agent, it keeps the shafts lustrous and soft. This powder is also used as a bulking agent in cosmetics as it thickens the formulations and increases the volume. Silk Powder is primarily used in high end makeup products including creams, gels, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners.

What is SILK POWDER used for?

Silk Powder has many uses for skin and hair when used in the personal care industry.

Skin care: Rich in amino acids, Silk Powder is primarily a skin conditioning agent. It enhances the skin’s elasticity and suppleness while absorbing excess oil from the surface. Often used in anti-aging products, Silk Powder creates a soft-focus effect - helping blur pores and fine lines. According to some studies, this ingredient also enhances the stability of UV filters in sunscreens.

Hair care: Silk Powder forms a protective barrier around hair making it smoother, shinier, and less frizzy. It helps repair damaged hair cuticles and is often used in heat protectant sprays, hair serums, leave-in conditioners, shampoos, and hair masks.

Origin

Silk Powder is derived from silk fibers, which primarily come from the cocoons of the silkworm. Raw silk is first treated with a mild alkaline solution to remove the sticky protein present in it. It is then broken down into fine microparticles. This processed silk is filtered, dried, and further micronized into a fine powder.
