Origin
Quaternium-70 is produced synthetically by quaternization of a tertiary amine (derived from stearic acid amide and dimethylaminopropylamine) with a chloroacetate ester of tetradecanol. This reaction yields a cationic surfactant with long hydrophobic chains for strong hair affinity. It is petrochemical-derived but incorporates fatty acid chains from renewable sources in some grades.
