PTFE

Last update on Jul 3, 2025

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), also known as Teflon, is a synthetic polymer used in cosmetics and personal care products as a bulking agent. It improves the consistency and enhances the texture of products like foundations, pressed powders, eye shadows, mascaras, and lip balms. This property of Teflon reduces friction in cosmetic products, allowing them to glide smoothly on the skin. PTFE is also commonly used in waterproof makeup, sunscreens, and long-lasting formulations. It is crucial to recognize that the risks of adding Teflon to beauty products outweigh its benefits. It is associated with hormone disruption and cancer risk, and is considered a "forever chemical" due to its environmental persistence.

What is PTFE used for?

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is used in foundations, primers, and waterproof formulations to enhance spreadability and water resistance. It bulks up beauty products to improve the texture and make application easier. Due to its ultra-smooth nature, PTFE gives formulations an even, lightweight, and non-chalky feel. It forms a hydrophobic barrier on the skin, enhancing makeup's long-wear and waterproof qualities. Additionally, Teflon helps evenly distribute pigments in formulations. Its absorption properties also make it suitable for oil-control powders and mattifying foundations.

Origin

PTFE is synthesized through a polymerization process where repeating units of TFE (tetrafluoroethylene) are chemically linked into a long-chain structure. The resulting PTFE microparticles undergo extensive refinement to ensure safety for cosmetic use.

Safety Profile

PTFE is permitted for topical use in cosmetics if it meets purity standards. However, it poses a high contamination risk and has been linked to cancer with long-term use. Additionally, it is non-biodegradable and contributes to microplastic pollution. With an EWG rating of 10, indicating significant safety concerns and usage restrictions, it is recommended to opt for safer alternatives to Teflon.
