POLYURETHANE-34

Last update on Dec 17, 2025

Polyurethane-34 is a synthetic film-forming polymer widely used in hair styling products. Known for its excellent holding properties and flexibility, it forms an elastic, non-tacky film on hair. It provides long-lasting style retention while resisting humidity. This versatile ingredient is particularly valued in modern, low-VOC formulations for its strong yet natural hold. It is commonly incorporated into hairsprays, mousses, gels, and styling creams. It delivers durable hairstyles with a natural feel and easy wash-out.

What is POLYURETHANE-34 used for?

  • Hair fixing: Provides strong, flexible hold for long-lasting hairstyles without stiffness.
  • Film forming: Creates an elastic, humidity-resistant film on hair strands for curl retention and frizz control.
  • Humidity resistance: Maintains style in high-humidity conditions, preventing drooping or frizz.
  • Natural feel: Delivers durable hold with a non-tacky, non-greasy touch for comfortable wear.
  • Easy removal: Washes out easily without buildup, suitable for daily use.

Origin

Polyurethane-34 is synthetically derived through a multi-step polymerization process. A copolymer is first formed from hexanediol, neopentyl glycol, and adipic acid. It is then reacted with hexamethylene diisocyanate to create the final polyurethane polymer. This controlled chemical synthesis results in a high-performance, aqueous dispersion ideal for cosmetic applications. The final form is typically a milky liquid dispersion.

Safety Profile

Polyurethane-34 is generally regarded as safe for topical cosmetic use and well-tolerated. It is approved by regulatory bodies such as the European Commission (COSING) and considered low hazard, with no significant concerns for irritation or sensitization at typical use concentrations. Extensive testing shows no adverse effects in cosmetic formulations. It is non-corrosive and suitable for leave-on products. Biodegradability profiles (readily biodegradable per OECD 301) make it environmentally considerate compared to traditional fixatives.
