OCTYL SALICYLATE

Last update on Oct 24, 2025

Octyl Salicylate, also known as Ethylhexyl Salicylate, is used as a chemical sunscreen agent in cosmetics. This organic compound protects the skin from UVB rays and sunburn; however, it does not provide protection against UVA radiation. Octyl Salicylate also indirectly supports anti-aging benefits by protecting the skin from these harmful radiations that lead to collagen breakdown and oxidative stress. Its oil-like consistency gives a rich, velvety texture to cosmetic products. Octyl Salicylate is commonly added to sunscreens, moisturizers, lip balms, and makeup with SPF. It is an essential supportive ingredient in photo-protective and anti-aging skincare. Moreover, Octyl Salicylate is often combined with UVA filters to provide broader protection for the skin.

What is OCTYL SALICYLATE used for?

  • Skin protection - Octyl Salicylate absorbs the harmful UVB rays and protects the skin from sun damage. For this reason, it is a common ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetics with SPF.
  • Anti-aging - By protecting the skin from sun damage, Octyl Salicylate also indirectly provides anti-aging benefits. It helps prevent wrinkles, collagen degradation, and pigmentation.
  • Texture enhancer - Octyl Salicylate has a silky texture that provides softness and smoothness to cosmetics. Moreover, it has a non-greasy finish that does not make products appear tacky.

Origin

Octyl Salicylate is made by esterifying salicylic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. An acid catalyst is added to promote ester formation, and water formed during the reaction is removed. Then, the residual catalyst is neutralized and the ingredient is washed to remove by-products. Octyl Salicylate, a colorless oily liquid, is purified before use in cosmetics. It can be recognized by its slight floral odor. The chemical formula of Octyl Salicylate is C15H22O3.
