Methicone is a low-molecular-weight, reactive silicone fluid (polymethylhydrosiloxane or methoxy-terminated dimethicone). It is widely used as a surface-modifying, hydrophobic coating agent and skin conditioner. It forms a thin, breathable, water-repellent film on skin, hair, or pigments, providing softness, smoothness, and protection while reducing tackiness and improving adhesion. This clear, colorless, low-viscosity liquid is a staple in makeup (foundations, powders, eyeshadows), sunscreens, hair products, and treated pigments. It enhances spreadability, water resistance, long wear, and a silky, non-greasy feel.

What is METHICONE used for?
- Skin conditioning / Surface modifier: Coats skin or pigments to create a soft, smooth, hydrophobic barrier. Frequently used in foundations, powders, sunscreens, and creams for improved feel, adhesion, and water resistance.
- Antifoaming / Slip enhancement: Reduces foam in formulations and improves glide/spreadability. Common in liquid makeup, sunscreens, and hair products for elegant application and non-greasy texture.
- Pigment treatment / Hydrophobization: Makes inorganic pigments (e.g., TiO₂, iron oxides, mica) hydrophobic and easier to disperse in oils/silicones. Essential in silicone-based foundations, long-wear makeup, and treated colorants for better stability and performance.
- Hair conditioning (minor): Provides light shine and detangling in some silicone-based hair products.
Origin
Methicone is produced synthetically by hydrolysis and polymerization of methylhydrogen dichlorosilane (MeHSiCl₂) or co-polymerization with dimethyldichlorosilane. It is followed by end-capping with methoxy or hydrogen groups. The result is a reactive, low-viscosity silicone fluid (typically 10-50 cSt). It is fully organosilicon-based (petrochemical-derived) and manufactured to high purity standards for cosmetic applications. It is often supplied as a 100% active fluid or in pigment-treatment blends.
What does METHICONE do in a formulation?
Safety Profile
Methicone is considered safe for cosmetic use per the CIR Expert Panel (safe as used in dimethicone and methicone fluids). It has a very low hazard rating from EWG (typically 1) with minimal concerns for irritation, sensitization, or toxicity. Its large molecular size and low volatility limit skin penetration. Non-comedogenic and well-tolerated across skin types, including sensitive.
