Magnesium Hydroxide is used in cosmetics for its pH regulating properties that protect the skin from damage against highly acidic chemicals. It also absorbs excess oil from the surface of the skin to make it look fresh and non-greasy. This ingredient is commonly added to cleansing products, suntan formulations, and hair dyes. Magnesium Hydroxide also goes by the name Milk Of Magnesia or Mineral Brucite. This inorganic compound appears as a fine, white odorless powder in its raw form. It is largely safe for use and is well-tolerated by most skin types. The chemical formula of Magnesium Hydroxide is Mg(OH)2.

What is MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE used for?
Magnesium Hydroxide is utilized in cosmetics for its versatile properties. Primarily, it serves as an absorbent agent, effectively controlling excess oil and shine on the skin's surface. This makes it a valuable ingredient in products designed for oily or acne-prone skin, such as primers, foundations, and powders. Additionally, its alkaline nature enables it to neutralize acidic compounds, offering relief for skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Furthermore, Magnesium Hydroxide contributes to formulations' texture and consistency, enhancing spreadability and ensuring a smooth application.
Origin
Magnesium Hydroxide is primarily synthesized through a precipitation reaction between magnesium chloride or magnesium sulfate and sodium hydroxide. Initially, magnesium salts are dissolved in water, forming a solution. Sodium hydroxide solution is then added gradually, causing Magnesium Hydroxide to precipitate out. The resulting precipitate is collected, washed, and dried to obtain Magnesium Hydroxide powder.
