LAURETH-21

Last update on Jul 2, 2026

Laureth-21 is a high-ethoxylated non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier. It is valued for its strong emulsifying and solubilizing capabilities, particularly in creating stable oil-in-water emulsions and clear formulations. This waxy solid or viscous liquid is commonly used in facial cleansers, shower gels, shampoos, makeup removers, and light lotions where high water solubility and mildness are required.

What is LAURETH-21 used for?

  • Emulsifying: Stabilizes oil-in-water emulsions with a light, elegant texture. Frequently used in lotions, creams, and cleansing milks.
  • Surfactant / Cleansing: Provides gentle cleansing and helps disperse oils. Common in facial washes and body cleansers.
  • Solubilizing: Dissolves fragrances, essential oils, and lipophilic actives in aqueous systems. Ideal for clear toners, micellar waters, and serums.

Origin

Laureth-21 is produced by the controlled ethoxylation of lauryl alcohol (derived from coconut or palm kernel oil) with approximately 21 moles of ethylene oxide. The reaction yields a high-HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) non-ionic surfactant with excellent water solubility.

Safety Profile

Laureth-21 is considered safe for cosmetic use per the CIR Expert Panel assessment of laureth surfactants. It has a low to moderate hazard rating from EWG (typically 1-3), mainly due to potential ethoxylation impurities (1,4-dioxane and residual ethylene oxide are minimized in modern grades). It is generally mild and well-tolerated at typical use levels (0.5-5%).
