GLUCONOLACTONE

Last update on Nov 25, 2025

Gluconolactone is a PHA (polyhydroxy acid) with gentle exfoliating and hydrating properties. It is known as the next-generation alternative to AHAs (like glycolic acid) as it is far less irritating and is suitable for sensitive skin. This face acid removes dead skin cells and gives the skin a smooth, brighter complexion. As a humectant, it draws moisture to the upper layers of the skin and keeps it looking supple and dewy. Since Gluconolactone is an acid, it is important to apply sunscreen on top before sun exposure. This chemical exfoliant has large molecules that do not penetrate the skin - making it safe for use.

What is GLUCONOLACTONE used for?

  • Exfoliant - Gluconolactone is a potent exfoliant that gently loosens the bond between dead skin cells, allowing them to shed easily. It helps improve the texture and radiance of the skin - leaving it refreshed and glowing every time.
  • Humectant - Gluconolactone draws and binds moisture to the skin, keeping it hydrated throughout the day. It is often used in hydrating serums, moisturizers, and lotions designed for dry or dehydrated skin. This ingredient leaves the skin plump and soft.
  • Antioxidant - Although not its primary benefit, Gluconolactone has some antioxidant properties. It can protect the skin from environmental stress, supporting a healthier and more youthful appearance.
  • Solvent - Gluconolactone can act as a mild solvent, helping dissolve oil and water-based ingredients in a formulation. It improves the distribution of actives and the spreadability of products - enhancing the overall product texture and performance.

Origin

Gluconolactone is derived from glucose, which comes from corn or fruits. The glucose is first oxidized to form gluconic acid. The gluconic acid then naturally cyclizes as water is removed during purification to form Gluconolactone. In its raw form, Gluconolactone appears as a white crystalline powder. Its chemical formula is C6H10O6.

Safety Profile

Gluconolactone is considered very safe for cosmetic use as it is one of the gentlest exfoliating acids available. An alternative to AHAs, Gluconolactone has large molecules that do not penetrate the surface of the skin - reducing its risks of side effects significantly. It is compatible with most skin types, including sensitive skin. Gluconolactone is also non-photosensitizing, although sunscreen is recommended. Very high concentrations and use on compromised skin should be avoided.
