GERANIOL

Last update on Dec 18, 2025

Geraniol is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol with a characteristic sweet, floral rose-like scent and citrus nuances. Widely used as a fragrance component, it enhances the sensory profile of cosmetic products while providing masking benefits. This versatile ingredient appears in perfumes, lotions, creams, lip products and cleansers, contributing to fresh, uplifting aromas. Its presence in essential oils like rose, citronella and palmarosa supports its role in natural and floral-inspired formulations.

What is GERANIOL used for?

  • Perfuming: Imparts a pleasant rose-citrus fragrance with green facets. Essential in eau de colognes, floral perfumes and scented body care.
  • Masking: Reduces or neutralizes unpleasant odors from base ingredients. Commonly added to deodorants, creams and makeup removers.
  • Tonic: Offers refreshing and invigorating effects on skin. Ideal for toners, facial mists and aftershave products.

Origin

Geraniol occurs naturally in many essential oils. These include rose oil, palmarosa oil, citronella oil, and geranium oil. In these oils, it constitutes a major component. It is isolated through fractional distillation of plant-derived oils or produced synthetically from petrochemical precursors such as myrcene for consistent purity. Both natural and synthetic grades are employed in cosmetics, ensuring broad availability and stability in formulations.

Safety Profile

Geraniol is generally considered safe for cosmetic use. However, it is classified as one of the 26 declarable fragrance allergens in the EU and must be labeled when exceeding 0.001% in leave-on products or 0.01% in rinse-off products. It has moderate sensitization potential, particularly upon air oxidation, with IFRA restrictions limiting concentrations. EWG rates it 4-7 due to allergy concerns, though irritation is low at regulated levels. Patch testing is recommended for sensitive skin. It is approved by COSING for perfuming and masking functions.
