ETHYLHEXYL PELARGONATE

Last update on Aug 14, 2025

Ethylhexyl Pelargonate is a synthetic ester used in formulations to give them a smooth, dry-silky finish. It is added to lotions, creams, and oils to enhance their texture and give them a velvety feel. It also acts as a lightweight, fast-absorbing emollient and is a popular alternative to silicones. Additionally, Ethylhexyl Pelargonate helps dissolve oil-soluble actives or pigments in a formulation. It appears as a colorless, oily liquid in its raw form and is insoluble in water. What makes this ester so popular is its lightweight, non-greasy texture that can often replace heavier oils in beauty products. The chemical formula of Ethylhexyl Pelargonate is C17H34O2.

What is ETHYLHEXYL PELARGONATE used for?

Ethylhexyl Pelargonate is a versatile emollient that enhances the texture, feel, and spreadability of cosmetic products. Its dry, silky finish and non-greasy after feel make it a popular choice in modern formulations, especially for lightweight skincare and hair-smoothing treatments.

For skin: Ethylhexyl Pelargonate makes the skin softer and smoother without feeling heavy. Its non-oily texture is an asset for light moisturizers, facial oils, primers, and sunscreens. Since it does not clog pores, this ingredient is an excellent choice for acne-prone or oily skin. Further, Ethylhexyl Pelargonate improves product spreadability and helps distribute actives evenly in a formulation.

For hair: In hair care products, Ethylhexyl Pelargonate provides lightweight conditioning and shine enhancement. It adds a silky feel to dry hair and reduces frizz. Since it does not feel greasy, it is great for fine or oily hair types that cannot tolerate heavier oils or silicones.

Origin

Ethylhexyl Pelargonate is made by the esterification reaction between pelargonic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. The reaction takes place in the presence of a catalyst such as sulphuric acid. Water formed during the reaction as a byproduct is continuously removed to form Ethylhexyl Pelargonate. The final ingredient is purified for use in cosmetics.
