ETHYLHEXYL HYDROXYSTEARATE

Last update on Jul 23, 2025

Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate is a synthetic ingredient, primarily used in cosmetics for its conditioning, emollient, and texture-enhancing properties. It has a silky and non-greasy feel and is able to soften and smooth the skin and hair without clogging pores. It also gives a non-oily, silky glide in formulations, reducing tackiness. Additionally, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate helps dissolve oil-soluble active ingredients and pigments while aiding the even distribution of colorants in makeup and sunscreen. It is often found in moisturizers, lotions, foundations, BB creams, lipsticks, sunscreens, makeup removers, and hair conditioners. The chemical formula of Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate is C26H52O3.

What is ETHYLHEXYL HYDROXYSTEARATE used for?

Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate is a lightweight, non-greasy emollient used in cosmetics to enhance spreadability and provide a smooth, silky finish. It is especially valued for improving skin feel and conditioning hair without heaviness.

For skin: Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate softens and conditions the skin by forming a light, non-occlusive film that helps reduce moisture loss. It enhances the sensory profile of creams and lotions by adding a silky, non-tacky glide. Suitable for sensitive or oily skin, it improves application feel without clogging pores or causing greasiness.

For hair: In hair products, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate helps detangle and smooth strands, improving softness and manageability. It adds a weightless conditioning effect that doesn't leave buildup, making it ideal for fine or oily hair types. It also helps distribute styling ingredients evenly, reducing frizz and enhancing shine without weighing the hair down.

Origin

Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate is produced by the esterification of 2-Ethylhexanol and 12-Hydroxystearic acid. The reaction takes place in the presence of a catalyst and gentle heat. After production, the final ingredient is purified and stabilized. Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate appears as a clear to slightly yellow, oily liquid in its raw form.

Safety Profile

Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate is considered safe for use in cosmetics with a low risk of irritation or sensitization. It is non-comedogenic, non-toxic, and non-sensitizing, making it suitable for sensitive skin and leave-on products. It does not penetrate deeply into the skin and is generally well tolerated even in higher concentrations. Regulatory bodies like the EU and FDA permit its use without restrictions. However, as with all ingredients, final product safety depends on formulation and individual skin sensitivity.
