ETHYLHEXYL DIMETHYL PABA

Last update on Jul 24, 2025

Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA, also known as Padimate O, is a synthetic ingredient used in cosmetics as a chemical sunscreen agent. It has the ability to absorb UV rays, which is quite harmful for the skin and is responsible for the premature aging of the skin. It protects the skin against sunburn and DNA damage. It is commonly used in sunscreens, moisturizers, and BB and CC creams. Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA can also be found in hair care products, though rarely. In its raw form, it appears as a yellowish, oily liquid that is soluble in oil. It is important to note that Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA is losing popularity in the cosmetic industry due to the presence of better alternatives out there. It is not particularly unsafe at low concentrations but is photo-unstable and reduces in effectiveness over time.

What is ETHYLHEXYL DIMETHYL PABA used for?

Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA is a useful ingredient when it comes to protecting the skin and hair from the harmful rays of the sun. Its main function is to absorb the UV and UVB rays and convert them into harmless heat, preventing sunburn and reducing the risk of long-term skin damage. Due to this, Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA also indirectly helps the skin fight wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of elasticity. It can be combined with other UV filters to enhance the overall SPF efficacy of cosmetic products. Its oil-soluble nature makes it suitable for emulsion systems and water-resistant formulations. Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA is also found in hair care products like hair sprays, leave-in conditioners, and color-protecting shampoos to protect the shafts from UV-induced hair damage.

Origin

Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA is synthesized through an esterification reaction between 4-dimethylaminobenzoic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. The reaction takes place in the presence of a catalyst, and water (a byproduct) is continuously removed.

Safety Profile

Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA is safe for use in cosmetics up to the concentration of 8%. It is, however, not recommended for infants or individuals with very sensitive skin. It is also prone to photodegradation, which reduces its effectiveness and generates free radicals. Additionally, it is suspected to be an endocrine disrupter, carcinogen, and potential irritant at high concentrations. Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA is also being called out for its aquatic ecotoxicity, and alternatives are being considered.
