Distearyldimonium chloride (DSDMAC) is a quaternary ammonium salt. Long-chain hydrocarbon groups and cationic ammonium confer surfactant- or detergent-like properties to it. It can be thus found as an ingredient in cosmetics and hair conditioners, where it is added primarily for its antistatic properties. It is a waxy, white to off-white or yellowish solid that may be supplied as a powder or as pellets.

What is DISTEARYLDIMONIUM CHLORIDE used for?
Distearyldimonium chloride is used in cosmetic formulations as a cationic emulsifier. To produce o/w emulsions with lamellar LC structures for better stability, aesthetics, moisturization, and active delivery, it is typically formulated with fatty alcohols. DSDMAC is frequently used for hair and skin conditioning because of its highly substantive nature to hair and skin (cationic). Suppliers recommend using distearyldimonium chloride in percentages ranging from 0.5-10%.
- Skin care: Emollient systems made of DSDMAC and fatty alcohols can be used to prepare lotions and creams for skin care applications so that "heavy" emollients like petrolatum can be delivered without leaving a greasy residue
- Hair care: It is used as anti-static agent and to enhance the hair's wet and dry combing properties. Although it has been included in shampoos, it is typically formulated into rinse-out conditioners with high levels of fatty alcohol, such as cetyl alcohol

Distearyldimonium chloride is obtained from the hydrogenation and hydrolysis of triglycerides (fats and oils) from animal or plant sources and separation of the resulting fatty acids by distillation.

According to studies, quarternary ammonium compounds (QACs) can cause fatal outcomes in both humans and animals. According to the studies that are available, the local irritating effects of QACs on surface tissues appear to be the cause of their significant toxic effects (skin, gastrointestinal mucosa, eye, and respiratory system). The irritative effect on skin, mucosal membranes, eyes, and the respiratory system is thought to be the critical effect in humans following exposure to QACs based on the data currently available. This ingredient, DSDMAC, has not yet been examined by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel.
