Last update on May 23, 2024
Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate is a surfactant and emulsifying agent widely used in cosmetics to obtain products of the desired quality. It enhances the water solubility of various other ingredients in a formulation. Further, this ingredient is also a great foaming and dispersing agent. In its raw form, Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate takes the form of a waxy solid that is colorless to light yellow. It is largely safe for use and does not negatively impact human health. Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate is the INCI name of di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfoccinate sodium salt and has the chemical formula C20H37NaO7S.

What is DIETHYLHEXYL SODIUM SULFOSUCCINATE used for?

Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate is primarily used as an effective surfactant and emulsifying agent in the world of cosmetics. It helps to improve the texture and spreadability of products by reducing surface tension, making it ideal for use in shampoos, conditioners, and body washes. Its excellent wetting and dispersing properties ensure even distribution of active ingredients, enhancing the performance of skincare formulations like cleansers, exfoliants, and makeup removers. Additionally, Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate is used in products designed for sensitive skin due to its mildness and ability to gently cleanse without causing irritation.

Origin

Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate is made by esterifying maleic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol to form diethylhexyl maleate. This intermediate product is then reacted with sodium bisulfite in a sulfonation process to produce Diethylhexyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate. The final product is purified for cosmetic use.
