What is CITRUS LIMON PEEL OIL used for?

Citrus limon peel oil is used as a masking, perfuming, and skin-conditioning agent in cosmetics and personal care products.

According to information supplied to the FDA by the industry as part of the Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP), citrus limon (lemon) peel oil has the most reported uses in cosmetic and personal care products; more than half of the uses are in leave-on skin care preparations. When diluted and applied topically, it can get rid of bacteria that get caught in pores and cause breakouts. By gently exfoliating dead skin cells that accumulate in pores and hair follicles, it can also aid in skin clearing. Limonene, a natural exfoliator, is a component of lemon oil.

It may also have astringent properties and can help with complexion improvement, especially for oily skin types that are prone to large pores. It can be used as a tightening and toning astringent in face washes to lessen oil production, as well as to lessen the appearance of cellulite in creams and lotions.

Origin

Citrus limon peel oil is derived from the rind of the lemon (Citrus limon) by pressing the outer rind of the ripe fruit by hand or by machine. The flesh, juice and rind of the yellow fruit can all be used for their fragrance and flavor. The flowers, twigs and fruit can be cold-pressed or steam-distilled to produce lemon essential oil.

Safety Profile

The safety of cold-pressed lemon oil (Citrus Limon(Lemon) Fruit Oil, and Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil) has been evaluated by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials Expert Panel (REXPAN). Based on this evaluation, an International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Standard has been established. The IFRA Standard restricts the use of cold-pressed lemon oil in fragrances because it contains some compounds that may cause skin effects when exposed to the sun. The CIR Expert Panel concluded that citrus-derived peel oils, including citrus limon (lemon), peel oil are safe for use in cosmetic products, excluding rinse-off products, do not contain more than 0.0015% (15 ppm) 5-methoxy psoralen (5-MOP), and when formulated to be non-sensitizing and non-irritating.
