Healthy hair - What ingredients to select and why?
Last update on May 25, 2026
Healthy hair needs a complete approach that combines science, performance, and consumer needs. Hair care is more than solving one problem. It includes scalp care, hair growth support, fiber repair, and frizz control. Each benefit depends on carefully chosen ingredients that work together in modern formulas.
Today’s consumers want products that do more than one thing. They expect solutions that improve scalp health, repair damaged hair, feel lightweight, and deliver long-term results in a single product. At the same time, formulators must choose ingredients that balance performance, compatibility, sustainability, sensory feel, and formula stability.
The right ingredients help formulators create products that are both targeted and multifunctional. These materials should provide lasting results without making hair feel heavy. They should also help restore the hair’s natural strength, shine, and resilience.
Demand for innovative and effective hair care products continues to grow. Because of this, it is important to stay informed about advanced ingredients and smart formulation strategies.
Explore hair care ingredients by INCI name, chemical family, application, performance claims, sustainability profile, origin, product type, and more. This helps formulators choose materials faster, smarter, and with greater confidence.
What is Healthy Hair?
People generally view shiny, smooth hair with narrow tips or neatly trimmed ends as healthy. The natural variations of our hair, which can be straight, curly, wavy, black, blonde, red, brown, white, or gray, are significant to who we are.1
You may want to change the structure of your hair due to the influence of your culture, or celebrities, or to go with fashion trends. Various safe hair cosmetic procedures are available that change how your hair looks. However, some damage to your hair may result over time.1
Hair issues like split ends, frizz, and loss of luster are most common among individuals who frequently change their hair's natural style or those with naturally weak hair.1
The hair care market2
In 2024, the global hair care market is expected to bring in US$93.74 billion. The market is projected to increase at a rate of 2.59% per year (CAGR 2024-2029). The revenue per person in 2024 is USD 12.10 relative to the total population.

Revenue of the Hair Care Market2
Transformation of the hair care industry3
The beauty and personal care (BPC) market is seeing a common trend of ingredient-led beauty products. Consumer concern about health, safety, and ingredients has naturally grown and become a major factor in hair care. This is because more companies welcome the "skinification" of hair through offerings containing skincare ingredients that prioritize scalp health.
It appears that consumers are more aware of ingredient formulations. According to the Voice of the Consumer: Beauty Survey conducted by Euromonitor International from June to July 2022, 17% of respondents worldwide said that ingredient compositions impacted their decision to buy hair care products in 2022, compared to 15% in 2019. A few reasons that have driven this consumer awareness are lawsuits, product recalls, and easy online education on various hair care topics.
The market for hair care products that address pre-existing conditions like hair damage, dandruff, and hair loss is undoubtedly still growing. But consumers are also realizing that a healthy scalp can lessen the incidence of shedding and dandruff as well as provide protection from the sun and heat. Due to their greater understanding of hair care than prior generations, Generation Z and millennials are especially interested in protecting and maintaining healthy hair from an early age.
