How to Improve Durability in Alkyd Coatings with Novel Catalyst Technology
- 25 min

Oxidatively cured coatings, such as alkyds and oil-based paints, rely on conventional driers or catalysts to increase reaction rates and achieve faster drying times. However, driers can offer more benefits than just accelerating drying times.
By selecting the proper catalyst, formulators can improve critical performance properties within their alkyd coatings such as gloss retention, weatherability, non-yellowing over time, and durability. Typically, formulators measure how durable an alkyd coating is by measuring hardness values through various test methods such as König and pencil hardness. However, hardness values are not the only way to measure the “toughness” of a coating.
This presentation will explore the key evaluation methods to determine the durability of a coating and highlight how Borchers’ novel catalyst technology can make alkyd coatings even tougher and more resilient.
