How to formulate fast drying paints and coatings?

Fast drying is a crucial requirement in paints and coatings: with faster drying, the need for extensive drying periods between coats is minimized. Less time spent waiting for drying translates to higher productivity and output. In some cases, faster drying can lead to a more robust and durable coating. This property although is highly dependent on the choice of your system.
What is drying?
Drying is the process where the liquid solvent (water in some cases) evaporates, leaving behind a solid film. This is what makes the paint harden and become usable. It isn't just one process, it actually has several stages:
Surface drying (touch dry): This is when the paint feels dry to the touch.
Recoatability: This is the time you can apply another coat of paint without the layers sticking together or causing problems. Recoat times can vary depending on the paint and drying conditions.
Hard dry: At this stage, the paint is completely dry throughout its thickness. It's harder and more resistant to scratches compared to touch dry.
Full cure: This is when the paint reaches its maximum strength, durability, and other intended properties. It can take days or even weeks for some paints to fully cure.
Underlying requirements
- Minimum film formation temperature: Fast drying paints typically have a lower MFFT. This means they can form a continuous film at a wider range of temperatures, even cooler ones. Since the paint can form a film at lower temperatures, it dries faster overall.
- Thickness of the film: Thinner film means fast drying.
- External conditions: high temperature will contribute to fast drying due to increased evaporation rate. Wind circulation also works on same principle.
- Quick evaporating volatile coalescents and low loading of non-volatile coalescents and/or plasticizers.
- Crosslinking speed must be compatible with the time needed for proper flow and leveling.
