In-can preservatives vs. dry-film biocides: what's the difference?

In-can preservatives protect the coating while liquid in the container, preventing spoilage during storage. Dry-film biocides stay active in the cured film, protecting against surface mold, algae, or fungal growth over its service life.

How do I choose the right biocide for my formulation?

Consider the spectrum of protection needed (bacteria, fungi, algae), compatibility with your pH and other ingredients, required dosage, and regulatory approval status. Combining in-can and dry-film biocides is common.

What are signs a coating's in-can preservation has failed?

Off odors, gas formation or can bulging, viscosity changes, discoloration, or visible mold. Any of these suggest microbial contamination, and the affected batch should generally not be used.

Does adding more biocide always give better protection?

No. Beyond the effective dose, more biocide doesn't meaningfully improve protection and can raise cost, labeling requirements, or compatibility issues. Using the minimum effective dose for the needed spectrum is recommended.
