Biocides (Preservatives)

Biocides are available as liquid dispersions or fine powders that function by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, fungi, and algae, preserving the integrity of coatings. Their key benefits include long-lasting protection, improved aesthetic durability, and reduced maintenance. Thus, they are indispensable in architectural, marine, wood, and industrial coatings exposed to biological fouling. 

The coatings industry is shifting toward non-leaching, encapsulated, and polymer-embedded biocide technologies. Regulations such as the EU Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) and EPA FIFRA impose stringent guidelines on permissible active ingredients, leading to the development of encapsulated and non-leaching biocide technologies. Alternatives include silver-based and polymer-embedded antimicrobial solutions. Subtypes include dry-film preservatives and in-can preservatives.
