Paper-based packaging concept with bio-based coating to meet EU's SUPD rules

Brands moving packaging away from single-use plastic under the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) face a recurring formulation challenge: matching the barrier performance, sealability, and production stability of established plastic-based structures with paper-based alternatives. Two new paper-based packaging concepts address that trade-off for dry food and oxygen-sensitive products such as chocolate and biscuits, combining fiber-based papers, bio-based coating chemistry, and application expertise into systems validated together rather than assembled after the fact.

Deliver functional performance while supporting recyclability

UPM Specialty Materials, Michelman, and BOBST have joined forces to develop the two concepts, each combining:

 

  • UPM's fiber-based packaging papers

  • Michelman's bio-based coating technologies

  • BOBST's application and processing expertise

 

Both concepts deliver functional performance while supporting recyclability and, where relevant, compostability across selected applications.

Designed for dry food applications

The EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) requires that certain packaging categories, including single-use packets and wrappers for food, move away from single-use plastic. The rules are in force, and brands are actively looking for alternatives.

 

  • The concept is designed for dry food applications that fall under the scope of SUPD.

  • It is based on UPM Prego with Michelman's bio-based Nuvita Life coatings, applied by BOBST. Both are independently certified as SUPD compliant according to PTS.

  • The structure is heat-sealable across a wide sealing window, supporting more stable production with less waste and fewer rejects.

  • The concept is recyclable according to Cepi/4evergreen v2.

 

"There is a growing market demand for SUPD-compliant packaging solutions. At the same time, barrier performance must remain equivalent to existing market solutions, and proposed materials must be fully compatible with current packaging lines, without the need for major equipment modifications," says Iulia Mihai, senior scientist at Michelman.

Concept for oxygen-sensitive products

The second concept also uses a bio-based coating, extended further on barrier performance.

 

  • It is designed for products that tend to go stale when exposed to oxygen, such as chocolate and single-packed biscuits.

  • The concept achieves an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of 140 cc/m2*day, measured at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, helping safeguard shelf life.

  • It is built on UPM Asendo barrier paper, with the same bio-based Nuvita Life coatings from Michelman, applied by BOBST.

Support smoother implementation, stable performance, and efficient production

UPM, Michelman, and BOBST each contribute a distinct area of expertise: fiber-based packaging papers, bio-based coating chemistry, and application and process technology. The three elements were developed and validated together from the start, rather than combined afterward. UPM ensures the paper structure and performance base, Michelman optimizes the coating chemistry, and BOBST aligns the application parameters and process conditions.

 

Because the combination is engineered jointly, converters do not need to work out how to combine the paper, coating, and machine settings themselves. The three elements are already designed to function as one system, supporting smoother implementation, stable performance, and efficient production.
