Conductive materials positioned for energy storage applications
The company highlighted several operational developments, including a technology upgrade at its facility in Sweden that recovers heat generated during production and supplies it to a nearby city. Orion also reported that operational improvements at its South African site reduced waste by 30%.
In addition, the company stated that its global operations achieved a safety performance rate that was nine times better than the chemical industry average.
Orion said its sustainability-related efforts were recognized through several external assessments and awards, including a Platinum rating from EcoVadis, 10 safety awards from the International Carbon Black Association, inclusion in the European Commission’s Innovation Radar, and a "Green Factory" designation in China.
The report identifies several growth areas for the company's conductive materials portfolio, including:
Battery energy storage systems, supported by increasing renewable energy deployment and the expansion of data centers.
High-voltage wire and cable applications used in electrification infrastructure.
- Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, which Orion said continue to represent a growth market despite near-term fluctuations.
“We see sustainability as a strategic business opportunity,” said Corning Painter, CEO of Orion. “Our ultra-pure conductive additives help power the global energy transition, from electric vehicles to grid-scale storage. We are helping enable a cleaner, more electrified future.”
The report also discusses Orion's bio-circular product portfolio. According to the company, its ECORAX® Nature 200 product can reduce product carbon footprint by up to 100% compared with conventional fossil fuel-derived grades.
Orion said this demonstrates the potential environmental impact of circular and bio-circular feedstock solutions.
