Enabling UV Hg and LED curing with minimal photoinitiators

Photomer® SC91 is a self curable acrylate resin with built in photoinitiator functionality. Unlike conventional systems, it enables UV Hg or UV LED curing with no or only minimal addition of external photoinitiators. This is achieved by integrating the photoinitiating groups directly into the resin backbone.

This Type II photoactive concept combines acrylate and photoinitiator technologies in a single polymeric material. As a result, the photoinitiator part remains chemically bound within the structure.

Supporting regulatory and performance requirements

Photomer® SC91 addresses key formulation challenges in modern UV systems:

  • Reduced or eliminated need for added photoinitiators
  • Low migration potential for sensitive applications
  • No detectable extractable photoinitiator under test conditions
  • Polymer classification with molecular weight above 1000 Da

According to the supplier, Photomer® SC91 delivers strong technical performance across multiple dimensions:

  • Efficient curing under both UV Hg and LED systems
  • Excellent formulation compatibility
  • Liquid form for easy handling and processing
  • Typical use levels between 10 and 20 percent in formulations

Supplier reports that as a Type II system, it requires the presence of a synergistic amine or hydrogen donor to achieve optimal curing performance.

Designed for a wide range of applications

According to the supplier, Photomer® SC91 is designed for a wide range of UV and LED applications, including:

  • Printing inks and packaging
  • Overprint varnishes
  • Industrial coatings
  • Adhesives
  • Electronics and advanced materials

Supplier reports that its flexibility allows formulators to simplify systems while maintaining high performance.

iGM Resins will expand Photomer® SC series to address evolving market requirements in performance, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. The company has indicated that additional grades are under development, with direction informed by customer feedback on acrylate and photoinitiator combinations.
