LANXESS Launches Sustainable Micronized Iron Oxide Yellow Pigments

Last update on Feb 7, 2025

LANXESS Sustainable Micronized Iron Oxide Yellow Pigments will offer a highly sustainable variant of its BAYFERROX® iron oxide yellow pigment in the future. The pigments marketed under the company's own Scopeblue label have a significantly reduced carbon footprint thanks to the use of more eco-efficient raw materials. This reflects the growing awareness of the raw material product carbon footprint (PCF) in the paint and coatings industry and the resulting demand for sustainably manufactured pigments.

Offers Reduced Product Carbon Footprint

LANXESS is responding to this development by gradually introducing Scopeblue product lines as part of its sustainability strategy. The Scopeblue label indicates products that are made from a high proportion of sustainable raw materials and that have a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to conventional products.

'With the launch of our new, low-emission yellow pigment product line under the BAYFERROX® brand, we aim to support our customers in making their own value chains more sustainable,' explained Daniela Schmitt, head of Global Marketing at the LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit.

'Having been the first manufacturer to help advance the introduction of environmental product declarations for iron oxide pigments, LANXESS is now building on its role as a sustainability pioneer with the launch of this new low-emission product line.'

Exhibits Uncompromising Quality

The new Scopeblue product line comprises the micronized iron oxide yellow pigments BAYFERROX® 3910, BAYFERROX® 3910 LV and BAYFERROX® 3920. They are ideally suited for high-quality formulations, like pigment pastes and highly pigmented facade paints, where they offer relevant potential for sustainable products.

The Scopeblue pigments are made from more eco-efficient raw materials based on renewable energies and have a PCF that is around 35 percent lower compared to the corresponding regular BAYFERROX® product grades. This figure is confirmed by a life cycle analysis that has been certified by the independent testing organization TÜV Rheinland. The origin and use of the lower-emission raw materials is certified according to the rules of ISCC PLUS using the mass balance method.

All of the product types in the new BAYFERROX® Scopeblue product line can be easily used in existing paint systems. They have the same chemical composition, color and functional properties as conventionally manufactured BAYFERROX® pigments.

LANXESS firmly believes that sustainability can be successfully integrated into business models. The company systematically evaluates its products from an economic, ecological and social perspective. By developing innovative processes and sustainable products, LANXESS is helping to make its customers' value chains more sustainable.
