KRONOS joins TER Chemicals to establish TMP-free titanium dioxide solutions
Last update on Jul 25, 2025
KRONOS, a manufacturer of titanium dioxide and TER Chemicals, a distributor of chemical raw materials, join forces to establish future-proof, TMP-free titanium dioxide solutions. This strategic collaboration stands for responsible action, technical excellence, and a clear commitment to sustainability goals - in full alignment with current and future regulatory requirements.
Addressing regulatory changes with safer pigment alternatives
Since 2020, TMP has been classified as a Category 2 CMR substance. As a result of this classification, certain application areas will be required to phase out TMP by 2027. TMP has traditionally been used for the hydrophilization of titanium dioxide to improve its workability in water-based and solvent-based coatings.
A further tightening of the classification is possible. Since 2022, authorities have been evaluating whether TMP should be classified as a Category 1B reproductive toxicant. Although a final decision is still pending, KRONOS is already taking proactive steps toward safer alternatives.
KRONOS introduced its first TMP-free alternatives to KRONOS 2190 back in 2023. Since then, the portfolio has been consistently expanded. Today, we can supply nearly all relevant industrial sectors with TMP-free titanium dioxide – especially those where stringent ecolabel requirements apply, such as in architectural coatings.
Focus products
- KRONOS 2190: The complete transition to a TMP-free grade is planned for 2025.
- KRONOS 2310: Already commercially available in a TMP-free version under the name Type 3752.
Additional TMP-free versions of products for the paint and coatings sector will be introduced step by step.
