FutureChem® EHMA: A versatile monomer for durable coatings
Last update on Apr 14, 2026
An interview with Beth Coles, Strategic Business Development Manager at FutureFuel Chemical Company
In modern formulation design, achieving the right balance of flexibility, durability, and performance is the key to developing materials that meet industry demands. FutureFuel Chemical Company has been working in this direction with a history of producing ingredients that add performance to products used in our everyday lives.
FutureChem® EHMA by FutureFuel Chemical Company is one such ingredient that enables formulators to design high-performance polymer systems with the desired qualities. It is a methacrylate monomer with an ester-like odor used in paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, inks, textiles, and printing formulations.
We interviewed Beth Coles, Strategic Business Development Manager at FutureFuel Chemical Company. She provides an overview of the company's manufacturing capabilities and explains how FutureChem® EHMA supports a wide range of applications while ensuring its consistent performance and supply.
#1. Could you share a quick overview of FutureFuel Chemical Company?
FutureFuel is a U.S.-based specialty chemicals manufacturer that produces high-value custom and performance chemicals for a wide variety of markets. FutureFuel supports customers across the full project lifecycle, from lab development through commercial production, by leveraging flexible assets, strong technical capabilities, and a well-established manufacturing infrastructure.
Based in Batesville, Arkansas, FutureFuel partners with customers developing new chemistries, scaling production beyond internal capacity, and securing reliable commercial manufacturing within a well-established U.S. infrastructure.
Beyond custom manufacturing, the company produces a range of performance chemicals, including FutureChem® EHMA. As a new producer of 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, we offer customers a reliable U.S. supply backed by experienced operations and consistent quality standards.
#2. What makes FutureChem® EHMA an important monomer in high-performance coating systems?
FutureChem® EHMA (2-Ethylhexyl Methacrylate) is a highly versatile monomer used across a wide variety of polymer applications.
Chemically, its behavior in a paint or coatings system is influenced by two key structural elements:

A branched C8 side chain: It lowers the glass transition temperature (Tg) to provide flexibility and impact resistance while also increasing hydrophobicity and water repellency for improved durability and weatherability.
- A reactive methacrylate headgroup: It offers high reactivity for copolymerization with other monomers to support adhesion, scratch resistance, and overall mechanical strength in the polymer.
This balance between flexibility and backbone reactivity allows formulators to design polymer systems that are durable, adaptable, and consistently high-performing to meet specific application requirements.

#3. What polymer applications benefit most from incorporating FutureChem® EHMA?
FutureChem® EHMA’s properties make it a preferred monomer in a wide range of applications. It can be copolymerized with a variety of monomers to tailor performance, including:
- (methyl) acrylates,
- styrene,
- acrylonitrile,
- maleic acid esters,
- vinyl acetate,
- butadiene,
- unsaturated polymers, etc.
These copolymer combinations enable tailored performance attributes across many different industries. Let's have a look at each of these industries in detail in the section below.

Coatings and paints
FutureChem® EHMA plays an important role in coating and paint formulations by enhancing flexibility, durability, weatherability, and adhesion. These properties make it well-suited for automotive, industrial, protective, and specialty coatings and exterior paint applications.

Adhesives and sealants
FutureChem® EHMA plays a valuable role in adhesive and sealant formulations by contributing to flexibility, tack, adhesion strength, and weatherability. These attributes make it well-suited for pressure-sensitive, construction, industrial, and specialty adhesive systems, as well as construction, industrial, and marine sealant formulations.

Plastics and polymers
FutureChem® EHMA contributes to improved toughness, flexibility, and elasticity in a variety of plastic and polymer systems. Its incorporation enables the development of impact-resistant and flexible plastics and specialty films used in a variety of applications.

Textile and leather
Softness, flexibility, and water repellency are key requirements in textile and leather finishes. FutureChem® EHMA enables these properties while maintaining durability in coated fabrics and specialty leather applications.

Ink and printing
Printing ink systems require a balance of flexibility, adhesion, and cure response. FutureChem® EHMA helps deliver these characteristics while preserving film durability in specialty and industrial printing applications, including UV-curable inks.
#4. How does FutureFuel ensure quality and consistency in FutureChem® EHMA production, particularly for customers requiring certain performance specifications?
At FutureFuel, we ensure quality and consistency in FutureChem® EHMA through robust quality systems, supported by our on-site laboratory and dedicated quality control team. Our commitment to manufacturing excellence and responsible practices is reflected in our ISO 9001:2015 certification and EcoVadis Bronze Medal rating.
We work closely with our customers to understand their performance requirements and maintain strict control over key quality parameters (purity, acid content, water content, color, and inhibitor levels). Automotive coatings can require enhanced quality control parameters specific to their end-use applications.
FutureFuel can support customers with on-site analytical testing, beyond the typical EHMA specifications, to assist with product validation, formulation development, or any other specialized performance assessments. This flexibility allows us to partner closely with customers and provide added assurance that FutureChem® EHMA will perform reliably in their applications.
#5. How does FutureFuel’s manufacturing expertise support reliable performance, supply, and custom solutions for FutureChem® EHMA?
FutureFuel’s site brings 50 years of expertise in specialty chemical manufacturing. This includes over 40 years of continuous production of high-value chemicals for the coatings industry. This experience gives us a strong understanding of customer performance requirements and the technical capability to meet those needs consistently.
Our site is certified under Responsible Care® and SOCMA’s ChemStewards® program, reflecting our commitment to process safety, environmental stewardship, and risk management throughout the supply chain.
