The Role of Surfactants in BENTONE® Organoclay Activation and Gel Formation

Supplied by Elementis

BENTONE® organoclays, based on Bentonite or Hectorite, offer unique chemistry for creating effective gel systems in non-aqueous media.

By modifying the clays with quaternary ammonium compounds, their surface is activated, enabling them to form strong rheological networks. However, certain substances like sulphonates and phosphates can interfere with gel strength by reducing hydrogen bonding.

Proper surfactant use and addition order are crucial for maintaining optimal viscosity and stability.
