ICL Phosphate Speciality Materials
Last update on Jul 3, 2025
ICL Phosphate Specialty is a division of ICL Specialty Products Inc., one of ICL’s (Israel Chemicals Limited) core operating segments. ICL is a leading global specialty phosphate producer committed to fulfilling humanity’s ever-evolving needs. Our HALOX® corrosion inhibitors were established in 1972 to meet regulatory, industry and customer demand for lead and chromate-free non-toxic pigments for corrosion resistant and tannin stain resistant coatings. For over 50 years, HALOX® corrosion inhibitors have provided the paint and coatings industry with innovative corrosion inhibiting solutions. BK Ladenburg GmbH as a 100% subsidiary of Hoechst and sold to the ICL Group in 1996. After the merger with Giulini Chemie in 1987 to form BK Giulini Chemie GmbH & Co. OHG, the company was renamed in 2003 to today's legal entity BK Giulini GmbH. Since 2013, the plant has appeared under the group name as ICL Ladenburg. This product line includes the brands LOPON® and POLYRON®.
As the global leader in providing HALOX® corrosion inhibitors to the paint and coatings market, ICL Phosphate Specialty is more than a pigment supplier. We are an innovative solution provider for your ever-evolving needs. Our HALOX® product line is formulated to offer safer, more durable, and longer-lasting solutions to address a multitude of coatings markets while also aiding formulators in achieving total system compatibility and identifying an optimum inhibitor package that addresses individual cost and performance targets.
Our trademark LOPON® includes different groups of additives like dispersing agents, defoamers and stabilizers which are widely used in water-based paints and plasters.
Our POLYRON® products are polyphosphates with a selected chain-length distribution. These products are extensively used as dispersing agents in pigmented water-based systems primarily, in water-based paints.

Market Applications/Benefits
Your Paints & Coatings Applications can benefit from ICL Speciality Coatings

Organic Corrosion Inhibitors
HALOX® Organic Corrosion Inhibitors are ideally suited for high gloss, thin film, and clear coat applications. They also provide superior synergy when used in combination with inorganic corrosion inhibitors in traditional coatings as they have been shown to improve adhesion properties, mitigate flash rusting in water-based coatings, and bolster corrosion resistance over multi-metal substrates & non-ferrous substrates at very low dosage levels. To achieve the desired performance of your resin system, proper selection of HALOX® Inhibitors is essential as they are specific to water-based or solvent-based systems.
Inorganic Corrosion Inhibitors
HALOX® corrosion inhibitive pigments provide a high standard of protection without the use of lead and hexavalent chromium compounds. ICL Phosphate Specialty proudly offers a variety of Inorganic Corrosion Inhibitors based on the proven performance of several metal cations, including many zinc-free options. Our Z-PLEX® products are designed to allow you to choose the right inhibitor for your performance and manufacturing needs.

Flash Rust Corrosion Inhibitors
Flash Rust Inhibitors are added to water-based coatings in order to stop corrosion formation that occurs during the drying process. Without the use of flash rust inhibitors, water soluble corrosion products migrate to the surface of the coating appearing as rust stains or spots. In addition to the flash rust protection provided by the entire line of HALOX® Organic Corrosion Inhibitors, we are proud to offer FLASH-X® products specifically designed to prevent unsightly staining which can ruin an otherwise perfect finish.
Tannin Stain Inhibitors
The advent of water-based resins for the architectural market have paved the way for new challenges associated with coating wood substrates. Customers applying water-based paints to wood know firsthand that water brings ("bleeds") out the soluble stains to the topcoat and causes the paint to discolor and look unsightly. XTAIN® tannin stain blocking additives were developed to augment resin technology in stopping the migration of these soluble stains to the surface of the paint. Tannin stain inhibitors come as white non-refractive pigments or as liquid additives which are formulated into paint where they are designed to react with soluble tannins to form insoluble complexes which do not migrate into the topcoat and cause discoloration. Tannins can be immobilized in the primer layer of a two-coat system or sealed in the wood substrate itself through technologies developed to provide this chelation mechanism using multi-valent cations.

Our trademark LOPON® includes different groups of additives like dispersing agents, defoamers and stabilizers which are widely used in water-based paints and plasters.
Dispersing Agents
The LOPON® dispersants enrich our dispersing agent portfolio with different functionalities providing a wide range of solutions to meet the needs of the coating industry. Compared to polyphosphates, our polyacrylates have the advantage of being structurally similar to the binder. This increased compatibility with many binders results in improved film formation and positive impact to scrub resistance and gloss.
Defoamers
Our LOPON ® E defoaming agents are highly effective solutions for defoaming water-based formulations. In order to meet the growing need for sustainable and eco-friendly products, most of our solutions are based on bio-renewable raw materials and are free of volatile organic compounds and mineral oil.

Stabilizers
We have developed highly effective additives for silicate emulsion paints which prevent the silicate groups in water glass from building up a polymeric network during storage and thus prevent the paints from thickening. With our stabilizers the viscosity levels off quickly and remains stable over a long period of time. We also offer VOC free products for indoor application.
Our POLYRON® products are polyphosphates with a selected chain-length distribution. These products are extensively used as dispersing agents in pigmented water-based systems – primarily, in water-based paints.Because of their optimized dispersing properties for inorganic pigments and fillers, they are used to obtain systems of stable viscosities. Another benefit is that they complex multivalent cations such as Ca2+ and therefore also act as water softeners.
