How to formulate for high green strength in adhesives?
Last update on Jun 16, 2025
Green strength refers to the early development of bond strength that forms shortly after the adhesive is applied. It signifies the point when the adhesive is strong enough to allow you to handle the bonded object, but well before it reaches its full curing strength. Typically, this initial strength is considerably less than the strength achieved after full curing. It is also known as ‘Contactability’. Contactability is shown when “legs” are visible after the first contact2.

Why is green strength significant?
Three ways adhesives with high green strength can enhance your processes:
Stronger bonding: Adhesives that possess high green strength are able to form a permanent, structural bond.
Faster assembly: No time is needed to wait for the product to cure before moving on to the next assembly step.
Better design flexibility: It offers enhanced design flexibility because they are able to bond lightweight materials together, such as composites, without impacting structural integrity.
