Description of Desired Solution
Sustainable plastic material that can withstand retort conditions as well as microwave heating and has a significant reduction, up to -50%, on the environmental impact to replace the current 3-ply pouch laminate structure with 1 year shelf life.
Background
Stand-up pouches are an ever-more popular choice for brand owners looking for innovative ways to market their products. But as consumers are looking for environmentally-friendly and recyclable packaging, the current 3-ply laminate structure must be replaced by sustainable alternatives to gain new market shares.
Detailed Solution Description
SpecialChem client is seeking a breakthrough in pouch sustainability (Carbon footprint, land use, water usage, waste & Energy). This should be achieved through a disruption in the construction of the pouch laminate film.
The pouch contains food and therefore needs to comply to the legislation for Food contact materials.
The pouch is a stand-up doy-pack style which is microwavable, and is easy to open.
The pouch needs to be printable, preferably gravure printing, and has a display function in store.
The product is retorted in the pouch at 127°C and has a shelflife of 1 year. The pouch consists currently of a 3-ply laminate PET-Alox coated barrier/OPA/CPP.
The laminate is not recyclable which is seen as an issue for the consumer.
Technical requirements:
OTR < 2cc/m²/day post retort, WVR < 2xx/m²/day post retort, Puncture resistance > 12N@100 mm/min with 0.8 mm probe.
The solution should not contain PVC!
A natural finish/appearance is a plus.
An end-of life solution such as a recyclable solution is preferred.
Possible Routes To Investigate (Not Limited to)
Possible solution can be found in reducing the current laminate structure by implementing:
- Mono layer proposals
- Plastics from renewable
- Recyclable materials
- End of life scenario’s, ….
Raw material suppliers (PP, PA, PET,…), film suppliers, pouch laminate suppliers could help develop the appropriate sustainable material.
Solution that are not of interest
Solutions with higher environmental impact as today will not be considered!
Food crop based plastics will not be considered
The solution should not contain PVC!
Timeframe for adopting this solution
Time frame to implement the solution can be a year to 5 years from today, depending on the proposals.
