Description of Proposed Solution
Our client is offering off-line coating facilities to manufacturers of coating dispersions, paints, lacquers etc.
Foil manufacturers wanting to add value and functionality by applying thin functional layers on either or both sides of the web would also benefit from this technology. Both SME’s and larger companies are welcome.
Background
Companies active in foil-manufacturing may be interested in adding value to their products by applying additional functional coated layers on either or both sides of the foil.

They may do so to improve their products with respect to wetting and coating behavior, or they may want to add “killer” functionalities to a common substrate to obtain added value and a better positioning in the market.

Likewise, manufacturers of coating dispersions, paints, inks and lacquers may want to evaluate their product with respect to the coatability of a specific substrate.
Detailed Solution Description
Coating technology has been SpecialChem Client’s core competence for more than 100 years. The application of multiple functional thin layers on different base materials such as PVC, PEN, PC, PET, cellulose triacetate, PE-paper, Aluminium, glass has become “common knowledge” to SpecialChem client.

A wide choice of coating systems is available both on lab scale as on pilot scale, all equipped with temperature, light, dust or humidity control possibilities. Coating systems like curtain or slot coating, table coating with blade or knife are all available on different formats. Aqueous and solvent coatings are possible.

Even high-throughput coating is possible in which several samples of coating solution are simultaneously applied. Not to forget the opportunity to use other techniques for coating application : ink jet printing, valve jet printing, gravure printing, sieve printing etc.

At the continuous pilot coater our client can optimize the coatablity of custom-made formulas at production speed, and can produce bigger amounts of prototype material in controlled drying conditions, comparable to the production circumstances.
Plasma and corona discharge pretreatment for better wetting and improved adhesion are available.

Optical evaluation of the final coating quality is possible by e.g. professional inspection systems, but also physical parameters related with the coating can be determined: friction coefficient, scratch sensitivity, abrasion and adhesion, coating thickness etc. Likewise, physical characterization can also be done prior to the coating : wettability of the substrate, surface energy measurement, rheology and surface tension of the coating solution may be measured to optimize the coating process.

Our client is aware of the fact that many companies, either making foils and substrates or producing coating dispersions, paints and inks, may not have the facilities for off-line coating. Our client is kindly offering these coating facilities to them and can share its competence and knowledge.
