Description of Desired Solution
Bio-adhesive systems (zinc-free) which could attach denture plates (eg Polymethylmethacrylate) to the oral cavity.
Background
We have global healthcare brands that could benefit from innovation with respect to novel bio-adhesive agents. Our denture care brands provide products that adhere denture plates to the oral cavity. The two adhered surfaces are the mucosa and denture resin, which is typically PMMA resin though a small amount of nylon dentures exist. We thus require an adhesive (zinc free) product that is safe to use with good adherence to gums and convenient release when needed (compared to marketed products). These materials must provide products that are better to current lead marketed products in terms of viscosity, residence time (12 hours) and shear strength (ability to hold in place).
Detailed Solution Description
We are looking for oral compatible, adhesive systems (GRAS safe for oral cavity) to fix PMMA dentures to mucosa surfaces of the gum (oral cavity). We will consider polymer systems, preferentially a cross linked polymer system, however it must be zinc-free. The adhesive must be compatible with saliva, be superior to existing marketed products, have good sensory characteristics for the mouth (acceptable taste, texture, minimal oozing etc). It must have a good denture hold profile for the 12 hour day (verses existing marketed products) and subsequent ease of release in the evening. We are not looking for gantrez based solutions or two-phase adhesives systems. Any solutions must provide better hold than products currently on the market.
Timeframe for adopting this solution
Timing depends on how far the technology is progressed (i.e. late stage research or ommercially ready) and can be defined during future discussions.
Other Comments / Important Considerations
Toxicology data (GRAS materials) to support safety in/on the body required. This is important as the product might be ingested to a degree.
Type of Outcome expected
Technologies identified will be considered with an aspiration of working with the technology owner to agree next steps.
