The first Click'N'Vote question of the New Year reveals that more than 49% of SpecialChem members identify lowering manufacturing costs as the most important factor in developing new/improved coatings. Reducing costs, as always, helps attract new business and retains existing customers. Typical methods to reduce manufacturing costs include make bigger batch sizes, substitute lower cost raw materials, reduce the number of raw materials, maintain tight control of inventory, eliminate in-house QC of raw materials by relying on supplier QC, that serve multiple end uses. Recently, in order to reduce manufacturing costs, formulators have begun evaluating multifunctional additives. Use of multifunctional additives will reduce the number of raw materials and, in some cases, can also result in improved product performance.
